NetBSD known for running on most any hardware platform has finally made its way to the kitchen, yes NetBSD really can run a toaster! Check it out:
Technologic Systems TS-7200 SBC uses NetBSD OS to control Toaster
Ok as mainstream as it may seem I do watch Adult Swim. Not only have I always been a huge Futurama and Family Guy fan, but [AS] also plays some really good anime shows. Which brings me to my first point: Why in the hell do they stop a show right in the middle of the damn series! Now I can understand seasons…etc,etc but at least say that’s what your doing. Instead they put on stupid ass lame “cartoon” like “12oz Mouse”, which sucks in a most terrible way, and then don’t say jack about the ones they take off.
The reason I am on this rant is because 2 of my favorite shows on [AS] are now “off” for the season I guess.
First: Full Metal Alchemist: One of the best mainstream anime shows I have seen in a long while, yet they stop right in the middle of a pivitol moment in the series. It really ticked me off.
Second: Samurai Champloo: An excellent show from the creators of Cowboy-Beebop, which has really captured my interest. Now while they did stop it an non-pivotal section of the series, it still angers me, I always looked forward to new show, it made my Saturday nights.
All I can say now is at least they finished GITS: Stand Alone Complex, which was stunning!
If you use KDE with Firefox & Thunderbird you might have noticed that ThunderBird always seems to open some lame GNOME Browser when ever you click on a link. I found an easy fix for it, here is what you do
cd into your Thunderbird folder (usually cd ~/.thunderbird/random.default/ the default folder is named different for every install)
Find the file named “prefs.js” and add the following line anywhere in the file:
user_pref(”network.protocol-handler.app.http”, “/usr/X11R6/bin/firefox”);
This will make Firefox the default browser in Thunderbird.
This was tested on the following config
FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE
KDE 3.4
Firefox 1.0.6
Thunderbird 1.0.2
Came across this on /. today, kinda cool (albeit pointless) send your name to Pluto on the New Horizon space explorer, NASA should charge for this kinda thing, they would make a mint!
I run FreeBSD 5.4-STABLE with Xorg with that I use Firefox 1.0.6 and I have the flash plugin installed (here is how I installed it: http://freebsdgirl.com/?page_id=550) so far most everything works great but for some odd reason every so often the simplest of flash buttons freaks out Firefox and it closes. Now at home I have a Slackware Linux box (yes I have a linux box, i know) running a very similar X setup and its rock solid. Now why can’t Macromedia get off of thier asses and simply compile for FreeBSD, I mean come on how hard can it be. There are probably 800 different linux distros out there and it seems to work for them, but heaven forbid you use 1 of the 3 *BSD flavors and all hell breaks loose. Of all the plugins I imagined having problems with Flash was way down on my list, I figured my MPlayer plugin would be the topic of a rant but its the most solid plugin I have. (insert plug for mplayer!) Hey Macromedia wake the fuck up!
Let me tell you after doing new server builds and setting up new services going back to writing code sure is a let down. I have several PHP projects in the oven right now and for some reason they are boring me. All I can think about is something else to tweak on my new servers. I guess you can call it “code burnout”. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy programming things it’s a hobby and a job for me, but lately its been hard to find the motivation to write code. Which is strange cause if you know me then you should know what my top clients do, and most guys would kill to have my job sometimes (yes my top clients are adult sites), but for some odd reason I am still bored. I guess when it comes down to it if your around that kind of content all day long while your writing code for it you start to think of it as work, which is sometimes a real bummer.
This week has been pretty busy around the office. We got the motorcycle in a somewhat buttoned down state now, so its going real good with that (cant wait to ride the damm thing). Home has been off kilter this week, Steph came down with something on Sunday, so she has been sick all week (and cranky I might add) and Sprout hasnt been feeling good either, so in other words I have 2 cranky females to go home too. (kinda makes me want to stay at work)
Tonight I plan on cranking up my DNS server, I have already setup a few test domains to run off of it, should be fun to play with over the weekend. Other than that I don’t want to do anything tonight, but I am sure that will change once I get home. Oh well…
Well I am finally getting around to building a new mail server and I used a guide that I have somewhat used in the past. (actually I did the same setup about a year before this guide appeared on OpenBSD) This guide makes setting up a full featured mail server quite easy. Includes clamav, spamassassin, virtual domains, mailing lists, sql support, and full web interface.
Here it is: http://www.qmailrocks.com
The guide is quite decent but for FreeBSD there are a few pitfalls I came across, most of which were easily cured by a quick “pkg_add -r” or a quick hop to /usr/ports. I will be doing another mail server here in a few weeks so I will detail it all out, maybe it will help those that get stuck!
While I am in server redo mode I am also building a new DNS server set. BIND is gone!! I am switching all of our DNS over to DJBDNS (finally). Let me tell you Dan Bernstein sure knows how to code easy software! (not to mention secure) only problem I will have is migration, it will take awhile to unkink my 7 years of bind usage! If you run a BIND server check out DJBDNS you won’t regret it!
Also if you are a FreeBSD admin don’t do what I did and forget to add the NIC driver to the kernel when compiling remotely, here is an excerpt:
NS1# cd ../../compile/NS1 ; make depend ; make install ; reboot
<cutout compile junk>
Connection to 192.168.10.18 closed.
ialone@GreatMaju:~$ ssh ialone@192.168.10.18
ssh: connect to host 192.168.10.18 port 22: No route to host
ialone@GreatMaju:~$
Damm time to run to the NOC, and “uncomment” #device fxp0, hehe fun day!
Well the first post in a new blog is alway so cheesy. What exactly should you say in a first post?
Suppose I could always do a Slashdot kinda thing:
Anonymous Coward: HAHAHA First post bitches
But like thier moniker says “Coward”, but that another story. Anyhoo this is the new site, gallery is currently going through a complete re-build and should be up shortly, code gallery is also being constructed as we speak as well. Hopefully I will be a little more on time with updates on this version of the site. Well see…
